Player Cards

Player cards show strengths and weaknesses from players' performances over the course of one season.

Players are given ratings from 0-100 which reflect their percentile ranking in each stat. EV Offense, EV Defense, Powerplay, Penalty Kill, and xGoals are based on my expected goasl model, while Goals, Primary Assists, Secondary Assists, Puck Management (takeaways - giveaways), Penalties (drawn - taken), and Faceoffs (won-lost) are stats provided by the NHL. Each stat is divided by time on ice and given a weight that contributes to the overall rating, which is a video game-like rating of how well a player performed over the course of the season.

Matchup Tables

The matchup bubble table graphic helps highlight how a specific player is performing against another team's players. These were developed to get a better sense of deployment in the playoffs when matchups become increasingly important.

The matchup bubble table graphic helps highlight how a specific player is performing against another team's players. These were developed to compliment the tables and show with colors and sizes who is a more ideal matchup for a given player. The bigger and greener the bubble, the more advantageous the matchup is for the highlighted player.

Unblocked Shot Attempt Chart

Each unblocked shot attempt contributes to the expected goals total of a game. A shot chart can indicate how well a team penetrated their opponents' defensive structure. This graphic shows where the unblocked shot attempts were taken from, broken down by period. Goals appear as green dots.

Scoring Heat Maps

Rather than showing where a team is getting a majority of their shots from, scoring heat maps highlights where a team has the highest shooting percentage.

Game Recap Cards

Game recap cards showcase who performed the best 5v5, who had the most expected goals, who played the most, and how the goalies performed.

Team Performance Plots

These plots separates a team by creating a line where the expected goal share at even strength is 50%. In other words, anyone below the line is getting outplayed at even strength, while those above it are carrying play and getting more chances than their opponents.

I use tables to present information like cumulative goals saved above expected (GSAx), cumulative expected goals, single game expected goals, and who had the best 5v5 results.
